Smile please!
Many thanks to Bob Dunch from Northumberland for this great photo, I just love puppies.
These five Bedlington Terrier Puppies were born just before Christmas 2006 to Bob's dogs Dougal & Annie.

what colour are the parents,,would love to know

They are either 2 blues or a liver and a blue. Statistically the latter is more likely. 2 livers can only produce liver puppies.
The liver/blue gene relationship is the same as the affected/carrier/clear status of the predominant CT gene and the colours of a litter can, to a certain extent, be planned if pedigrees are studied. The sandy gene is, I believe, recessive to both and complicates the issue.

Thankyou for that stu,I too would have thought a liver/blue mating was the most likely..have you ever known such a mating to produce only blues?

what a brill photo would make a lovely xmas card, the white fleece could almost be snow, a little bit of holly , or a little xmas tree, and you have a xmas card,i would love to make some for the midland champ show, would that be possible, please

If the blue doesn't carry the liver gene all the puppies will of necessity be blue. They will all carry the liver gene. We've had litters which went both ways from a liver/blue mating.

How can you tell if the blue carries the liver gene,is it by studying the pedigree and finding out if the ancestors have given birth to livers?

Stu said...

If a blue has a liver parent it is 100% sure to carry the liver gene. If a blue produces even 1 liver pup it carries the liver gene. It is possible, though unlikely for an infinite number of generations to pass on the liver gene without it manifesting. Hence the occasional surprise when two blue carriers of the liver gene get together. The liver gene must come from both parents.
See the chart for Autosomal recessive genes in CT in Ken Bounden's book which explains things clearly.
