To Hot To Walk

yva

Thanks to Viv for the photo. This is Nicki’s “Yuva”  who  decided it was far to hot to walk any further at the Royal Norfolk Show yesterday and jumped into the pram for a ride. I just love this photo,  Viv  please can I enter it in the calendar competition?

All Washed Out!!!

w

We're being washed away with all the storms and flooding in the North East! Ronnie HATES to go out in the rain but as you can see she does enjoy watching it from the safety of indoors...

Thank you Carly, I think there must have been a few bedlingtons in north preferring to watch the rain from a window than venture outside. I gather from the news the storms caused chaos in the northeast. No rain for us yesterday just very humid.

Belated Happy Birthday To Ronnie Who Has Just Celebrated Her First Birthday

11

Here are the Ronnie pics I attempted to send on her 1st birthday (june 20th) to the Tiscali account- wondered why they never appeared!
She is such a good lass now, and having passed her Bronze, is now training for silver- tho I suspect only responding to commands with the lure of sausage, she is a long way off from taking the test....
Amusingly, she now cocks her leg every time she wees. I thought maybe she was copying my mam's boy dog who she stayed with recently but our trainer tells me it's an indication she's a good strong bitch! Any other bloggers experienced this?

Thank you Carly so sorry for missing Ronnie’s birthday. It could have been the email system or I accidently deleted it your letter. I can’t stress enough if you don’t get a reply or see your post on the blog resend  the email. If for some reason I could not post your letter and/or photos I would let you know.
Well done on your Bronze now onwards and up wards towards to silver test.
I have never seen a bitch cock her leg before, this is a new one for me!

Yesterday At The Royal Norfolk Show

Another lovely day today at the Royal Norfolk Show - we were happily having a party, and a dog show broke out.  The usual suspects were there - Mary, Gay, Karen, Nicky, Joan and me, with Helen, Natalie and Dawn roped in as extra handlers. (Kath & Lucy were working and couldn't go)

Junior
1st    Mary's Mavis
2nd  Gay's Barney

Limit
1st    one of Mrs Baldwin's, but don't know which, as I'm too tight to buy a catalogue - also went RBOB
2nd    Joan's Petal
3rd    Mary's Bridget
4th    Kath's Freddie
VHC   Karen's Taz

Open
1st Viv's Bonnie, BOB and pulled out in the Group
2nd Nicky's Yuva
3rd  Joan's Ziggy
4th  Mrs Baldwin's other one

All the dogs had a nice walk round the main show, and were fussed and patted by about a thousand people, then sat in the shade and crashed out! Weather in the afternoon was baking hot - we all went home after the Group judging, so we didn't have to sit for hours in a queue of show traffic on the A47. Good time had by all !  Sorry, no photos - no-one to wield the camera, as we were all too busy flitting in and out of the ring. Viv

Thank you Viv congratulations to you and Bonnie, a good entry, nice to see the bedlington classes well represented.  It certainly was a baking hot day yesterday, unfortunately we are back to wet, wet, wet, today in Oxfordshire..

Technical Hitch

For some reason I am NOT receiving emails to my Tiscali account. If you have sent  mail recently to the tiscali account please send again to caineslesley@gmail.com.

Update… my tiscali account seems to be working this morning, but if you send me mail and I don’t reply or you don’t see your letter on the blog PLEASE send again. It is also easy to delete a genuine blog letter when I have so much rubbish come in to my in-box everyday.

Thanks Lesley

Entry for the MBTC September Open Show is now available via www.arenaprint.co.uk I will not be sending schedules out although I do have a few if anybody actually wants one, or it can be downloaded from areana print. The cost of postage is so high and a real drain on the Club's limited resorces so this is one way that the Club can save money. I plan to be at most Championship Shows and will have Schedules with me. I hope that exhibitors will find this a real convenience and continue to support the Club.

The Judge for the September show is Alex Hurley who may not be known by newer exhibitors, but I am sure that they will all know his mother who is giving tickets at Windsor!

The Championship Final

At Leeholme yesterday there was a big turn out (even more than last year) even though the weather wasn,t that great, it was windy and looked like rain was on the way. There were 7 bedlingtons in total, unfortunately I did not get the names of the other bedlingtons and owners

1st Billy and Issacc
2nd Me and Bramble
Veteran dog/bitch
1st Billy and Mini
The championship was won by Issac and Rip the border was reserve.

When the bedlington terrier class was being judged it started to rain and just as the judge was about to award the rosettes it just poured down as though someone had just turned a hosepipe on us. We were absolutely drenched and Iv 'e never seen a field empty as quick. People taking refuge under trees, fleeing to their cars, inside the raffle tent, anywhere that people could find shelter.
Just after we were awarded our rosettes I turned around to leave the ring and Billy's dog Mini had disappeared from the post she was tethered to. I walked in the car park shouting for her and luckily enough someone had caught her and put her in the car with them until we came off the field. Billy was reunited with his Mini.
After 10 minutes or so the rain stopped and people appeared again and the last few classes were judged. I'm sure it was mentioned on the blog last week that bedlingtons never win the champion terrier, and I have never known it, BUT......... today that changed as Billy's issacc won champion terrier ( from 15 class winners) Well done Billy and Issacc!!

.LEEHOLME 2012 CHAMPION TERRIER: ISSACC & RESERVE: RIP

Thank you Karen, yesterday was a great day for the breed, lovely to see a registered show bred  bedlington winning a working championship, it just proves it can be done!

Happy Birthday To Erin, Arthur, Grace and Esther…..

DSCF1590

Today is Arthur and Erin's 1st birthday, "Hoorah"!!!!! Perhaps they,ll grow up a little now, ok no chance. They had a lovely walk with Trevor this morning, while I was at work. They like their walks with him as he lets them get up to all sorts of mischief, unlike me who tries to be in control lol. This afternoon they had a bit of a party, even being allowed to sit at the table to eat their pork pies. The terrible 2 send Birthday greetings to sisters Grace and Esther also brother Freddy, hope they got their pork pies too! My how time flies. Jane

DSCF1581

Than you Jane A  happy birthday to the teenagers. From the look on their faces there is still a lot of mischief making coming your way!  I bet they enjoyed their pork pies  and felt very special being allowed to eat from the table. Do hope Grace and Esther enjoyed their special day too.

A Rarity For A Bedlington, What A Win!

Bill and Issacc WON the working terrier championship at the Sheldon Working Terrier and Lurcher Show this afternoon. Issac, won best bedlington  with five others in the class and went on to win the championship beating the best of the Lakeland, smooth and  rough coated  Jack russells and the other best of other breeds competing in the terrier show. This is the first time I have ever heard of a bedlington winning the championship at a working terrier event. Issacc will go on to compete for a champion of champions final later in the year. Also well done to little Mini who won the veteran class

champ

This is great news Billy it puts the bedlington back on the map at the working shows, many congratulations!

Talking About Dog Food

What a choice where does one begin? Each brand has a distinctive  glossy package and promotes the best health in your dog what ever breed, size, condition or age. You almost need a degree in animal nutrition to make head or tails of some of the ingredients stated in small  writing on the back or side for the packaging. I don’t want to go into the science of dog nutrition but there are several websites that explain the importance and quality of ingredients that go into many varieties of kibble. I feed raw to our bedlingtons but always have a bag of good quality dried food on hand in case of emergencies. I am  very interested in dog nutrition and if I can do spend time in pet supermarkets reading the ingredients on packaging.  I was told about this dried food last week and was very impressed by the quality, it seems an excellent food and wondered if anyone  in bedlington land feeds “Green Dog”?

Do take time to read the information in the index column.  This food certainly seems to be  of excellent quality and for me ticks all the right boxes.

Go Barn Hunting In The USA

hambarn2

“Hammer” working the ground by a wheelbarrow

Barn Hunting is a  new discipline in America, I would think primarily for terriers. Dog clubs throughout the USA are holding competitions and they hope to get the event sanctioned by the American Kennel Club
The idea is that the dog has to locate hidden rats  to the handler. There are different levels to achieve starting with the dog locating just one rat in the intro class leading up to a dog having to locate up to four rats. In the senior class the dogs have to locate 4 rats to the handler avoiding  decoys of rat bedding and rat urine. The  event is timed and the dog has just four minutes to find the rats, the handler has to signal when they think the dog has found the real rat. The rats are hidden in a large area and the dogs  run frantically trying to locate them. After the dog finds a rat, the rat wrangler picks up the little cage and removes it from the area. If barn Hunting events are sanctioned by the American kennel club there will be titles offered.
RAT1 (Intro)
RATO (Open
RATS (Senior)
RATM (masters)

Earth dog trials are very popular in the USA where live rats are used and positioned in cages at the end of tunnels. The same rats are used frequently for these events, they are safe in their cages and apparently are oblivious to the barking snarling terriers. Saying this we don’t have events like Earth Dog or Barn Hunt in the UK. Using live rats in cages for sport may be frowned upon here and with our hunting laws it may be illegal to hold such events.

dibarn1

This is “Diamond” who passed the Senior Level locating four rats (ignoring the decoys) in four minutes. Many thanks to Jeri for the info and photos. This as a great fun event for the dogs and a fantastic opportunity to see the terriers at work.

Blackpool, The Show That Will Blow You Away

Blackpool Committee is reported as saying it tried unsuccessfully to secure an alternative car park and so cancelled the last 2 days of the show. True that by lunchtime Friday the car park looked pretty dodgy, and we were lucky to be next to the access road and managed to get off. Others were bogged down. However, that I feel was the least of their problems. Bedlingtons showed in Tent C and our wet weather ring was saturated with water, and gradually got worse as the dogs were exhibited. One of the stewards borrowed a yellow drying cloth, and had to wipe down the table after every dog had been examined. Exhibitors were carrying their dogs into the ring and by the time they came out the dogs' feet and legs were caked with mud. Most of the exhibitors showed in wellies. I felt sorry for the judge, who also judged in wellies, as this was his first CC appointment. A lot of the exhibitors were saying "we must be mad to show in these conditions". I've seen wet conditions at shows before such as SKC in May and Driffield, but I've never seen anything worse than Blackpool on Friday. The access ways inside the tent were a sea of mud, and you sank in several inches in places. Outside rings could not be used because of the rain, and pretty well the whole showground was covered by standing water. In really bad weather you can expect internal access ways to get churned up, but you should be able to expect the wet weather rings to be usable. I did not take pictures, but a number of exhibitors did and I am sure they will demonstrate more graphically than a written description how awful the conditions were. How ironic that the Show's strapline is "the Show that Will Blow you away".

I didn't look in the other tents, but from outside they weren't lookin too clever. Even if the Committee had secured an alternative car park I don't see that judging would have been possible given the condition of both the outside and wet weather rings. As I recall this is the second time Blackpool has had to cancel on this site part way through a show because of the weather. I was told that the Blackpool Society own this site. If they do they need to think carefully about future shows. Cancellation causes far more problems for the Committee than for individual exhibitors, but clearly this site is vunerable to the weather. Traders lose money, and many have already been adversely affected by the poor weather this year. The only trade stand doing a roaring trade on Friday was the one selling wellies and raincoats. Whilst a Committee cannot legislate for severe weather conditions, which on Friday also forced the Blackpool arrangements to greet the Olympic Torch to switch to indoors, something must be done. Otherwise I guess the Show will lose entries (up by 521 for this year's Show), but already down for many shows because of the financial climate, and trade stands, (notably fewer at some shows this year). One can only wish the Committee well in dealing with the aftermath of this show and arrangements for future shows. Derek Owen

Thank you Derek, It must have been horrendous travelling and trying to show dogs in those conditions. The committee can’t control weather but It seems to me the showground is not suitable.  In adverse conditions there is not much you can do to stop flooding in what is perhaps a low lying field I am guessing there is no underground drainage in place. The torrential rain seems to have just poured into the tents. Maybe a new venue will have to be found.

We Catch Up With Ian Jazz And Sapphire

photo

Hello Bloggers,
Well we have not had a quiet spell for a fortnight. The last weekend was a real busy one for little Sapphire and Jazz. As Friday was my day off and the weekend was my turn NOT to work we started to clear the patch of land where we keep our camper. Jazz and Sapphire decided to give me a helping paw  to do some runs over to our local tip with the trailer to get rid of the rubbish (and to kill two birds with one stone ) go for a walk as well. By the time we had finished it was tea time and all three of us were tired. Our first project was to do up the trailer and we are about to start out new project  to do up our folding camper (or trying to should I say)!
On Saturday all three of us were up early to have a walk around one of the meres before we headed of to Shrewsbury and their carnival. The Whitchurch Dog Display team  put on a Dog Display in the main arena to a large crowd of may be 5 or 6 thousand people! We are not being big headed but all the dogs stole the show every one was cheering them and clapping them on. But that was not all, Radio Shropshire was there and they were giving a commentary live on air about the display. The chap doing the commentary  suddenly recognised us and said that there was to dogs in the Display team who had texted into the radio station and he mentioned Jazz and Sapphire on air. After the display was over he came over and interviewed some of the team members and ourselves. All the people I have seen so for this week said we heard you and the dogs on the radio on Saturday.

6786aa28a4baf3e1eafa2c7a[1]

On Sunday we headed off with the last load for the tip and bumped into one of our friends from Radio Shropshire in Oswestry (who was doing a radio version of treasure hunt), he was on his way to the food and drink festival in Ellesmere.. We went along to the festival and had a look round and we  we were mentioned on the Radio again.
During our walk we
saw the Red Arrows come over Ellesmere on their way to Welshpool and then back to Cosford air show. Sapphire, Jazz and myself decided to go to Houghmond hill with binoculars to see the air show. What a display,.there was the Red Arrows, a Spitfire, Hurricane and a Lancaster Bomber in among the Typhoon Jet Fighter and modern planes.
On Sunday evening when reading at the blog we realised we had missed “Boy” the Bedlington and his owner who visited Whittington Castle where Sapphire, Jazz and myself cut the grass. What a great shame it would've been nice to see them and have a chin wag together!
Now Sapphire and Jazz are taking it easy until a week on Friday, Saturday and Sunday when we have another display on at the Ellesmere Regatta.
So we shall let you all know how it goes. Bye bye for now Sapphire, Jazz and Ian

P300512_11.48

Thank you Ian although very busy I think you had a great fun weekend. We will look forward to hearing all about the display at the Ellesmere Regatta and not forgetting the renovating of the camper.

Rescue Bedlington Or Bedlington Lurcher Wanted

I have been given your e mail address by Mrs Hoaksley who said you may be able to put a WANTED ad on your blog.
I am looking for a bitch Bedlington anything from about 1 year to an older one. I have a wire haired Dachund, eight year old boy. My whippet died last September and I do like to have two dogs together. I do not have a cat. My dad had Bedlingtons when I was young , I have always liked them. We are both retired, walk our dog twice a day and I think they have a pretty good life here. Well fenced garden and comfy home. We have a 2 year old grandson who visits  about twice a week but our Dax is used to going outside when he comes round. I wouldn’t mind a Whippet  Bedlington cross.
Hope you can help. Phone 01924 255536 Mobile 07763 330320
I live in Wakefield but don't mind travelling. Thank you Wendy Coy
Thank you Wendy let’s hope a needy dog comes you way soon. I will forward your letter to Bedlington Rescue and re-homing.

Odie Turns 1

ooo

 Good morning all,
It was the birthday of our beautiful Odie yesterday. He had a wee haircut last week and he has had some treats bought for tea.
He has brought a lot of joy to Lucy (our other bedlington) and to our family. He has slotted into our family beautifully. We love him loads.
He is the son of Gnejnabay Solo Star and Janwhiffen Diamond Codey. Many happy birthday wishes to his siblings !
In his first year of life he has achieved a bronze certificate for the kennel club obedience training. He also achieved very comfortable sofa status in the living room ( ie he jumps on the sofa and grabs himself a cushion for his head for a nap ).
Debbie and Family

Well done to Odie gaining his bronze award, do hope he is carrying on with his training to try and gain the silver. A very happy birthday Odie

In Memory Of Bruce Nicolls

Bruce got his first dog a Staffordshire Bull Terrier in 1949 which was bought for him as a present by his father. The Staffie was bred by George Down and  became a champion. Bruce and Eileen married in 1951 and moved to a house on the A40 in West London where they a acquired a Norwich Terrier as company for the Staffie. At that time, due to the busy  road and the London location they decided not to have more than the two dogs. Bruce and Eileen moved to Worthing in 1980 and had their first bedlington from Peggy Lay in 1987 when Peggy went to live in a retirement home. Since then Bruce took a keen interest in the breed and a Bedlington has always been a part of the Nicolls’s family.
Bruce awarded  Challenge Certificates in Staffordshire Bull Terrier and Norwich Terriers. He will be sadly missed by all of us who knew him and exhibited our dogs under him.

The funeral will take place at Worthing Crematorium on the A24 at Findon on Friday June 29th at 1.40pm
Family flowers only but donations greatly received to the League Of Friends at Worthing Hospital.
In memory of Bruce the blog will not be updated tomorrow!

With Sad News….

I have to report the passing on of Bruce Nicolls. Bruce had been poorly over the last few months and had been in and out of hospital. Our thoughts today are with Eileen and the family. Bruce will be sadly missed  not only by friends and family but many in the terrier world and everyone who is on, or has been on the BTA committee.

We Welcome The Torch In Tow Law

IMG_2442_1

We couldn’t join the Bedlington parade , due to work commitments, so went along on Saturday afternoon to Tow Law. We were lucky that the rain had stopped and only restarted when we were heading home. It was pretty cold due to the wind; Tow Law is pretty bleak (we’ve heard it called a 2-coat town). We stood opposite the friends and family of the first runner, so there was a lot of clapping and cheering, which Rosie and Jasper joined in, with their barking. It was a good atmosphere, with a good turnout from a small community.

Sunday we were busy at Tynemouth beach welcoming a Doctor who is kayaking round Britain to raise money for the National Rheumatoid arthritis society, before he starts his new consultant job in Newcastle in September. He left Greenwich on April 1st and should be finishing on July 6th. For more details of his challenge, you can see his website at www.martinkayaking.co.uk/ What an amazing guy, and a fantastic journey. They don’t let dogs on that part of the beach in Summer, so Tony had to wait and watch from the slipway. But we got a lovely run on the sand at the other end of the beach after the welcoming party was over. Best wishes Sarah, Tony, with Ed, Ossie, Rosie and Jasper

Thank you Sarah, at least you did not get soaked but looking at spectators it looked very chilly, unbelievable for mid June! The very best wishes go to the Doctor, it seems an incredible feat to be manning a kayak that distance, hope  he is wearing special arctic clothing for his expedition. Do take a look at the website and the route he is taking

Issacc came nowhere in the Champion Class which was won by a Fell Cross. I took Duke into Bull X Class and came 1st and qualified him for The Uplands Terrier and lurcher Championship in August. Thanks to Karen with Brambley who took the picture Billy

Well done Billy I have never seen a Bedlington win a championship at a working show it is always Patterdale, Fell, Lakeland types. The bedlington is not highly rated by the many working terrier judges.

Update on the Bedlington Blog Fishing Team

Stuart and Angela Yearley, Tony and Tina Welsh, Elwyn Wright and Tony and Sandra Waller are at Top Barn Lakes on a fishing holiday. They have been away a week and don’t return home until next weekend. So far Stuart has caught the most fish being 22 and Tony  Welsh has caught the heaviest fish. Do hope they have good weather and enjoy the rest of their holiday together.
