Well the K9 Marshal Crew are gearing up to a busy few months with practice for the display season with the team and some rally events to marshal. We have a rally event the weekend before the fun day.
We are keeping our eyes open for a lost Bedlington Terrier called Jake who went missing from his home near Market Drayton his details are on the lost dog website so if any one of our friends out there hear anything please let us know because his family miss him so much!!! Hi this is Benji looking for a new home. Very sweet 3 year old boy but had quite a bad start in life. Very frightened of children but seems fine with everyone else. Can be homed with other dogs but they would need to be calm. He is chipped and neutered. Please contact Chris on 01483 472823.

Thank you Julie I have not heard that the breed clubs are organising a clinic this year. Keep your eye on the dog papers they usually have a list of forthcoming clinics and there is usually eye testing every day during Crufts. Notification of the testing sessions came through with passes on postal entries.

Midland Musings

It seems hardly believable we are on route to the end of January already! To me it is even more astounding to see Arthur and Erin grown so quickly into proper young bedlingtons, it seems not that long ago we were eagerly awaiting their arrival. On the other hand I wish they would grow out of the chewing stage, which malicious person told us keeping two from a litter was easy as they keep each other occupied, PARTNERS IN CRIME MORE LIKE! lol
The dreadful duo thoroughly enjoyed their trip to Stafford last week, taking it all in their stride. Erin treated it like a meet and greet occasion, making friends everywhere she went. It seemed the bigger the better, her 2 favourites being an Otterhound and a most gentlemanly Afghan who lay down so she could inspect him more closely. She also was most appreciative of the kind stall holders who had left bowls of their wares for her to sample. I think left to her own devices she would have stuffed herself silly!
Thankfully this winter has been so much kinder than the last, well so far at least. As the weeks roll by the chance of any serious coatings of the dreaded white stuff become more remote and the thoughts of spring become a happy reality. Jane xxx

Thank you Jane, I just love the photo of Erin and Arthur in the field. They look so alert something definitely attracted their attention! I must say this winter has provided many dreary miserable days but it is a relief not to be surrounded by the white stuff. We live on an unclassified lane and couldn’t get the car out for several days last winter.

Durham Walk

Just a reminder and update on the Durham Walk on Sunday 5th February meeting 10am for setting off at 10:30am. Still meeting up down beside the old ice rink. Directions, from A1M junction 62 take the A690 towards Durham. after a couple of mile you will come to a roundabout. Take 3rd main exit signed Claypath. Down Claypath bank to traffic lights and turn right at lights down Providence Row. At bottom of Providence Row you can either park on the street which is free on Sundays or in Freeman's Place car park besides the old ice rink which is £1.20 on a Sunday.

On leaving the car park the walk will proceed over the foot bridge to the west/north side of the river and head upstream along Framwellgate Waterside towards the Millburngate Bridge and Framwellgate Bridge. Pass below these bridges along the river side still to Mill House where this picture was taken of the Cathedral and The Old Fulling Mill.

From here along to Prebands Bridge which we pass by and keep on walking until we reach St Oswald's Church yard. Here we will need to walk a short way down Church Street to where we get to the start of the Concrete bridge beside Dunelm House.
After crossing this bridge we descend down the steps to the east/south bank of the river and back towards the Prebands Bridge. (If any one needs to there is a shorter route to the Cathedral than descending the steps. Just walk straight ahead and you will come to the green.) At Prebands Bridge we turn right up through one of the old gates to the Cathedral and colleges, up South & North Bailey to Dunlow Lane and meet up for pictures outside of the Cathedral.
Then it's a short walk down Owengate and North Bailey to the Market Place where there are ample beverage opportunities and even fish & chips. From here it's just a short walk down past the Gala Theatre back to the car park.This route can be seen on Google Maps. Just type Durham Uk in the search box.

Thank you Derek I know everyone is welcome, especially those new to the bedlington. Meeting up with bedlingtons and their owners is ideal for those wanting to learn more about the breed. Not only bedlingtons but all dogs are welcome, I just wish we lived near enough to join you!

Wednesday’s News From Wales

Good morning , Bloggers. I've chosen a lovely summer garden to cheer us up in this dreary greyness. Anyone know where it is?

All the dogs around here are fed up with the wet weather. Ours took one step outside this morning and ran straight back in but we put our wet weather kit on and took them out anyway. Larry has to have his coat on because , at 13 years, he feels the cold. Elwyn has been taking his for walks alongside the river and they have been coming home covered with mud. His little granddaughter, Alma, in New Zealand is fascinated by lizards and he has been looking for a toy one to send out. Fortunately we found some horrible stretchy ones in John Lewis. I'm sure she will love them. Tim is off to watch his son and granddaughter in a Pantomime in Burton-on-Trent next weekend. Last year his son was the Dame and was very funny. We're going to see our grandson, Tomos, in a Welsh Language play a week on Monday and on the 14th. Feb., Megan and Andrew in their school production of West Side Story so between us all we might get some Golden Globe nominations!

Thank you Enid, what a lovely photo, it is certainly very dreary looking outside our kitchen window this morning. Hope everyone has a good time watching their family members in the forthcoming productions. As Enid said Midland bedlington closes today get your entries off! We won’t be at the show as our daughter and myself are taking my mother away again for a holiday. My mother has Alzheimer's and I feel this will be her last holiday. When in unfamiliar surroundings mum needs a full time carer and it will be easier with two of us to look after her. Mum really enjoyed our trip back last October and it’s lovely to see her smile at the thought of another holiday. Jon will be staying home dog sitting and hopefully keep the blog ticking over!

Martin and Julie Say Goodbye!

Our Fosbury passed away this morning 2 months short of his 16^th birthday. He was with us for the last 4 years and with medication had gone from being a very poorly fellow to a strong handsome dog. Over the last 6 months he had become quite lame and wasted in one back leg and was starting to show his age. His other back leg was starting to fail him and we felt it best to allow him to pass on in peace. He will be sorely missed as he was such a great character, always helping out with making lunch and emptying the bins. I’ve attached a photo of him. Best regards Martin and Julie

Good Morning Bloggers, there's not much going on around here at the moment. A farmer gave us a brace of pheasant last week so Hefin had the job of plucking them with Solo doing his best to help. I roasted one and made a Kashmiri Curry with they other. The internet is brilliant for finding recipes. The dogs were not that keen on the meat until I put gravy on it!
Pat and Clifford Evans were not able to come on New Year's Day because Clifford was unwell but they sent me a jar of fantastic honey from their bees. I've been adding it to yoghurt and porridge. This is sounding more like a cookery blog than a dog one!
It was nice to see Sonja with her dogs. If I remember rightly, she had a bitch from Kevin Mumford and when she had puppies they all stayed because she couldn't bear to part with them. Good luck to Janmark Justintime and to all those showing at Manchester. Enid

We will all be keeping everything crossed for Mark tomorrow, it would be lovely to read Vy was in the ribbons. Although no classes at Mancherster the AVNSC classes usually have a good showing of bedlingtons, I think terrier day is tomorrow, good luck to everyone entered!

Busy Weekend for the k9 marshal crew

Hello all. Well Jazz and Sapphire were complaining on Sunday morning that they were still tired from a nice big walk (Adventures) on Saturday and on Friday. Since it was my weekend off work (hurray) we met up with our friend Biggles down at Sleap Airfield to walk the parameter road, which is 3 miles from start to finish, as well as around Colemere, Jazz and Sapphire enjoyed watching the planes taking off and coming in to land and they were not frightened by the noise of the planes revving up at all! They sat there on the grass in front of the tower having a cupper tea and some of theie favourite doggie biscuits.

Our friend Biggles has never been up the Wrekin a 1,376 feet high hill j in Telford so on Saturday we took along with us, not only did Biggles enjoy all the views from the top but Jazz and Sapphire thought it was great. When we got to the top where it opened up and the dogs raced around like to mad little pups playing with some new doggie friends. they all joined in and their were 6 dogs racing about playing and having a whale of a time.

On Sunday Mum, Jazz, Sapphire and myself went off for the day and ended up on the Audlem stretch of the canal unfortunately we didn't see anything of the Missing Bedie , We had a good 3 mile walk and saw a great wood carving of a horse on the tow path. These wood carvings are appearing a lot more around here and 90% of them are great. So it’s bye bye for now, time for 2/3 of the K9 Marshal Crew to put their paws up (lucky things) while the other 1/3 has to go back to work (boo hoo) from Ian, Jazz and Sapphire

Thank you Ian, there certainly are some lovely places to walk the dogs up there in Shropshire. You always have such a lovely time with the dogs, they are very lucky paws! I wonder who carved the big wooden horse, he’s quite impressive? .

.Mr Ward 90 now years old when young was the only photographer in the Bedlington Area. He took photos of bedlington terriers some of which were printed to make post cards. Here are the first of the photos, two of which were made into post cards. The post cards were sold in the local Bedlington Post Office

Eleven Beddys a Beagle and Two Westies Waiting For Mum

Firstly, I would like to thank everyone for their lovely replies.. Some of you wanted to know a little more about the family…..OK HERE GOES!

We have Riff-Raff (Riffy) or his 'posh name' Tredomen Hector, he's the 'Daddy' and is 15 years old. His children are Frank, Rags & Blue – sadly, Beautiful Becky passed last year.
Then we have Andrew, otherwise known as 'Mummy's Boy' Rosy, who's Daddy Girl (That's my hubby Bill, in photo (he's the one without fur!!!)Toby, who once belonged to our Son, Randy, Lucy (Lucy-Locket), otherwise known as 'MANIC' because she is!! Susie, who does nothing but bark! Pippa (Pippa-puppy), who's now 6 years old but still the youngest & still called Pippa-Puppy!!

Our Beagle, Penny is big & fat and just appeared at our gate about 7 years ago....still here!!!
And finally, long story but we were walking along the beach & got talking to a lady - she took our telephone number, as she wanted advice on chickens (we have lots of other rescue animals too!!) She rang us some time later, asking if we knew of anyone to take on two ex Puppy-farm Westies (no, I know, not chickens!?!) So now we have Molly & Phoebe too!
The more the merrier & they all live in the house with us - or should I say, we live in the house with them - that's more like it!!! lol Sonja xxx

Hi, We've looked at the blog for ages now and decided to post for the first time with some pictures of our little Lollypop !

Lolly has just turned two years old (but is still very dark) and was one of Sandra Hyde's lovely little pups. As you can see she goes from tramp to vamp quite nicely when washed and clipped by Mel, but like many Bedlingtons she seems to prefer being scruffy and mooching around in the long grass! Hope to make the walk in Durham in Feb so may see some of you there. Best wishes, Ian and Doreen.

Experts presents include Mike Gadsby, who will do demonstrations on handling. Geoff Corish and Michael Coad will be giving tips on showing, grooming and handling. Margaret Anderson offering guidance on grooming.

Other talks include judging and breeding. Presentation in the East Hall on nutrition, Lisa Croft Elliot will be on hand giving advice about photography. Marina Scott and Helena Hutchings will be offering junior handling sessions, with mini competitions after each session. Top five will go forward to final at end of day where they will handle a different breed.

“Vy” Competes In Junior Stakes Finals on Wednesday

Now in its 18th year, the Petplan Junior Stakes Finals has established itself as a popular and well supported event on the UK dog show circuit. Junior Stakes is open to dogs and bitches from 6-18 months on day of qualifying. The quantity and quality of entries continues to strengthen from year to year and the Grand Final on Wednesday will bring together some of the finest young show dogs in the country for an exciting culmination to this year’s competition.
Already many of these young stars have made an impact in their breed rings and this year the level of competition promises to be as high as ever. As is the tradition with the Finals of this event, dogs will be judged using a points system where Breed Type, Conformation and Movement are rewarded and the highest scoring dogs also have the luxury of extra points given by the judges for “Star Quality”.
The finals will be held on Wednesday at Staffordshire Show Ground.
Janmark Justintime JW Shcm will become only the second bedlington terrier to compete for this award & this is the last finals in this format! Mark

It was a very busy weekend for Summer, yesterday was Spennymoor & Distrist Open Show and today was Carlisle & District Open Show. No Bedlington classes today class entry was A.V. Terrier N.S.C, Summer was placed first, then it was a very long wait for Best in Show, where she was short listed out of 30. Today At Speenymoor & District

Today was Speenymoor & District open show held once again at Spennymoor Leisure Centre. Like a lot of these centres dog shows have been banned for the last few years. However as most councils are now strapped for cash there may be a change of mind as to there use. As in past years this venue was well packed, guess to get a good place you need to get to the show for the doors opening, however once the hounds and utility were shown more space was available. The eventual Best In Show went to a Dachshund, some of us were most surprised

Here we have Summer, Aireview Cristal Blue ShCM who came second. John also had TJ with him though not for show, a lovely lad though I'm biased as he's a Makem

Now we have Esther, Nicnasus Sparkling Diamond. This was Esther's first show and she managed to get Best Pup and Puppy Group 2. She also went on to a first in AV Terrier Pup before I had to come away from the show. You may recall it was Estther that Jayne's neighbour throw to one side at the start of this week. The incident does not seem to have effected her. So hopefully we will have another Bedlington pup out at the shows here in the North East.

This is Jack who's about 8 months old and has just been for his second haircut. We first met Jack up at Newbottle Ring Craft club when Mark was judging a match night. That night he was just a big ball of fluff. He's now becoming quite a nice lad and now no bother on the grooming table. He came from Goole, not sure of the breeder as can't place the face, bet someone will know. Hopefully he will be turning out for the Durham walk on the 5th February. The Makems

My name is Sonja and I met Pat on eBay with bedlingtons Larry and Leo. She said to contact you – so I have! At the moment, we have 11 Beddies - mostly rescue ones. We also have a rescue Beagle & 2 Westies. Everyone knows we're a soft touch when it comes to an animal needing a good home!

Wednesday’s News From Wales

Good morning Bloggers. It's been quiet now that all the festivities are over. We managed a trip to the beach last week in between showers and Solo and Ecco had a great time chasing each other around in circles as Bedlingtons do.

Jack, Alan and Maria took Ester to her first show on Sunday. It was the Welsh Kennel Club Open Show . The judge was a replacement because Peter Eva was unwell. We wish him a speedy recovery, Ester behaved very well both on the table and walking and came 2nd. in AV puppy. She wasn't a bit put off by the noise and cramped conditions. Maria told me that Ester has been very mischievous since the show, tearing up toilet rolls and sellotape. She absolutely adores Morgan and sleeps on his head at every opportunity.
Solo is developing a very odd preference in food. He's always loved raw carrots but lately he's pestering for radishes, celery, cauliflower leaves and butternut squash. It seems that whatever vegetable I'm preparing he wants to try some. Are there any other Bedlingtons out there like him I wonder?
Elwyn Wright has had to say goodbye to Maggie, Ch. Toffset Treasure Trove. She was taken ill suddenly last week and went into kidney failure. As you can imagine, he was very upset but put all his energy into clearing out his spare bedroom as his son has moved into his own flat at last.
Just a reminder, the closing date for Swindon is 21st. January. Chris Harris is judging our breed. Judy Thompson has schedules if you would like to enter. Neighbourly Love!!!!!

One of the rarer photos of these 2 outside together! Can get loads in the house but not outside! Had a great time on the beach and in the dunes yesterday. And for once they didn't come home too Raghu and so are still sportin their newest haircuts.
Unfortunately not long after we got home both dogs came outside the front of the house with me and one of my neighbours grabbed Esther by her shoulder and flung her aside and landed on her side I was horrified! Never got to say a great deal as he looked as if he was going to do the same to Eva so picked them both up and got them in quick came back out and he had gone! She had walked up to him and tried to say hello. She wasn't hurt thankfully but didn't seem herself last night. Thankfully today she is back to her normal self. Jayne

Hello all,
First thing first we would like to wish you all a very happy new year and all the best for the coming year, Jazz and Sapphire pups are getting geared up for a day out in march for Crufts dog show to help out on the discover dogs stand. The display season starts the same day as terrier day at Crafts, and what excites Jazz and Sapphire is that it isn't long before the start of the rally season which means going in to the forests to test their 4 paw drive system to the max and see all of their friends again!

Jazz and Sapphire pups had a nice new years eve, Mum and Brian went out with friends to see the new year in and I stayed at home with the dogs which I must admit I really enjoyed. We had lots of fun playing games together i.e. go find your toy, sit and stay, then come and find me if you can (lol), typical they won every time! I still recon that they were cheating (looking when they shouldn't have)! When they were getting ready to drink in the new year they had a big cuddle each and they sat in the window and watched all the fireworks going off.
On new years day we went off for a special adventures, we did a good 6 mile walk down the Montgomery canal then we came home for a very nice pork dinner which Mum had cooked, it was very nice !!!!!!!!!!!! After lunch we played Jenga before sitting down to watch some films on telly. Jazz was cuddled up with his Grandma and as for Sapphire she was cuddled up with me having big cuddles!

This weekend I'm not working so after giving the K9 Marshal Crews Limo a washr the dogs and myself will be heading out to Storm Whittington Castle to see where we can cause some mischief ha ha. So for now t.t.f.n from The K9 Marshal

Hogmanay in Edinburgh

We spent our new year in Edinburgh (one of the most popular places for Hogmanay). The celebrations started on Thursday evening with a torch light parade along Princes Street to the ‘son et Luminere’ and fireworks finale on Carlton Hill. You might have seen it on the BBC news. It was excellent, and fortunately the fireworks were mainly pretty rather than noisy, so the dogs, who were safely in the flat, were not worried by them.
New Year’s eve itself is a busy noisy event, so we had a good walk early on, and Tony and I nipped out to a concert in St Giles Cathedral, which finished before 10 PM. We were home in good time to settle the dogs before the strike of midnight, when the spectacular fireworks start, simultaneously from the castle and Carlton Hill. Ed loves watching, the other 2 boys are not bothered, and Rosie gets shaky with the noise. Fortunately Rosie and Jasper where fast asleep in front of Jools Holland in the living room and missed it all. We have an excellent view from our kitchen of the whole display. Ed sat with us the whole time, fixed on the colours in the sky. When the display finished, he turned to me, and licked my nose, beating Tony to a new year’s kiss

Here they are in the afternoon, Ed and Ossie at their lookout point. We bought the cubes in a charity shop because Ed and Ossie used to get bored in the flat. We’re on the second floor, and they couldn’t see out. But now they are contented, there is so much going on in the streets below. The only people who can see them are the people on the top of the double decker buses, and we often see them smiling at their fluffy heads. Happy new year to all our blog friends Sarah

How proud am I! For those new to the blog Diamond and her brother Hammer were bred by me and went over to California as pups to live with Jeri and train in performance events, Both dogs compete in agility and rally competitions but their claim to fame this year is they are the top simulated Coursing bedlingtons in the USA under the American Kennel Club rules.

Here we have Hammer Coursing under the American Kennel Club rules. In this leg Hammer had to run 600 yards in under a given time, quite a way for a small dog!

We Catch Up With Cotton

Hi Lesley,
I'm being very organised for a change and not taking four months to send an update! Here is Cotton on our Boxing Day walk. In natural light her coat looks a lot lighter! I am hoping the lighter blue creeps up her ribcage and along her back further as it seems to be doing but we'll have to see.
We went to stay with family over Christmas and she was very good, a lot more confident about the whole thing than I thought she would be (and that wasn't neccessarily a good thing, didn't take long for her new hobby of barking for the joy of it to start again!). She was completely besotted with my Uncle and amazingly my Auntie who isn't a 'doggy person' was constantly paying Cotton attention and even picking her up!
Along the walk on Boxing Day my Auntie and Uncle were Geocaching (treasure hunting/orienteering with GPS) and so of course I made a little Christmas Bedlington out of a cracker for them to leave behind at a Geocache site....obviously Cotton found it in the house (despite putting it out of the way!) and wanted to see what it tasted like but he survived the attack!

Poorly Finlay

I thought I'd email regarding Finlay. He's 18 months old and has suspected syringomyelia, he's been very poorly for the last few days :( I have never read anything about this condition in bedlingtons, and was wondering if you or anyone else have heard of, or had any experience of this condition. I'm very concerned and want to do what I can for him. It seems that it's very difficult to treat and the prognosis isn't good : Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you Charlotte

Syringomyelia in dogs

Syringomyelia is a condition where a sac filled with fluid develops in the spinal cord of the dog. This can be due to several different reasons, where the most common one in dogs is a malformation of the Chiari I. In dogs suffering from this type of malformation, the occipital bone is underdeveloped and interferes with the circulation of spinal fluid. This causes fluid to accumulate in the cervical spinal cord of the dog. This is a congenital disease and small dogs are much more at risk than medium sized and big dog breeds. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is especially plagued by inherited Syringomyelia. If your dog develops Syringomyelia, it can become weak and start moving its limbs and torso in a clumsy fashion. It can also show signs of pain in the neck.

Midland Musings

Well I don,t know about you lot but we had an absolutely fabulous Christmas! For once I had a break lasting more than the usual couple of days, enough time for us to travel down to our favourite place, (you,ve guessed) Southwold. What a change from last years weather, when everywhere was covered in ice and snow. In contrast, this year Trevor and I were walking the mutts on the beach without even wearing a coat

and what a time they had!!!!!!! Delighted to be back at the seaside Arthur and Erin went quite wild with excitement when let loose on the beach, as you can see the north sea was almost as blue as the Med. They roared in and out of the waves, collecting flotsam and jetsam to play with, Erin especially liked an old shoe she found. One morning while out with Trevor they came across a baby seal, Trevor thought it was dead until it objected to Arthur who was giving it a good telling off. My mum was pleased to see the little darlings again, as they were her and behaved very well when visiting.

As they reached 6 months on Christmas Eve, the dreadful duo were launched into the world of showing this Monday, with hilarious results. Unfortunately, (or not!) I had to work so could not see just how badly behaved they were. I think they quite enjoyed the experience but didn’t quite get what it was all about. "Oh well they’re only babies!", that's my excuse anyway. All that remains for me to do is wish one and all a very "Happy New Year". May all your dreams, doggy or otherwise come true. Jane xxx

Good morning Bloggers. Happy New Year to you all. The new Year's Day party went off very well and as you can see, I had plenty of help with the washing up - a big thank you to Julie and Deborah.

This year I cooked lasagne, chilli and butternut squash curry which everyone seemed to enjoy. We always have kegs of beer from Rhymney Brewery which is just a few miles away and it is proper ale which everyone enjoys, especially Elwyn! The only problem was that Diane had a bump in her car on the way home but she's OK. (She didn't have any beer, only lemonade). The dogs spent the afternoon in the camper van but we let them come in before everyone left. Larry made a bee line for Kevin, as usual. He found him straight away in the middle of about 20 people. It's funny how they never forget who bred them.

Come out, come out, there’s no hiding from us!!!!

Tuesday was a horrible day and our front garden was under water and the rain was torrential. It did ease off about 11 o'clock for us to take the dogs out for a short walk but then they went on cat alert on top of the sofa. Hopefully, the weather will improve because we want to go to the beach again for them to have a god run on sand rather than mud. Good luck to all those showing in Boston. Enid

We will be thinking about Sharon and her bitch Crystal who went to term but very sadly lost all her puppies last night due to a septic uterus. Crystal is very poorly and we will keep everything crossed she pulls through and there is some positive news today..

Lily is finally looking like a Bedlington after losing all that hair following her last season – tho’ it is going to take a few more weeks to grow out the strange spot of puppy hair on her top knot! Happy new year to all. Elaine

Thank you Elaine they both look very smart I rather like Lily’s brown skull Cap! I remember after Fudge had a litter she went completely bald. She was not ill and eventually the hair grew back. Luckily it was during the summer, I will have to dig out the photo.

How about meeting up at Durham for a walk round the river?? This would be on Sunday 5th February 2012 with the usual starting time 10 : 00 for 10 : 30.
There's free parking on a Sunday down beside river and the large grassy area where the fairs and circus usually go. That's close to the old ice rink.
From A1M take the A690 towards Durham, At the first roundabout take the 3rd exit. Down a bank then at the traffic lights go right again down a further bank. Bear right at the bottom where you will see the large area of grass and parking at the side of the road.
As some parts of the walk will be on roads dog and child leads are needed. All of the walk is on either paved or cinder paths so prams or wheel chairs can be used.
The walk will end up in the Market Place in Durham where there's plenty of places for eats and drinks, even fish & chips.Cheers The Makems

Lucky Northeast bedlingtons. I just wished we lived near enough to join in! It is like the fun day, lovely to catch up with old friends and meet new people to the breed. You certainly don’t have to have a show dog to join in our bedlington activities, it is also lovely to see the bedlington lurchers taking part in our social events. There will be classes for bedlington luchers at the fun day in May.

Eva Is Three Today
